INSPIRING CONFIDENCE

MICHELLE, EMPLOYMENT CONSULTING CLIENT.

I hope [my story] inspires others to be confident that, if they follow [Seneca’s] advice and do what is suggested - that is, fix their LinkedIn account, update their resume, improve their interview skills - they will get their dream job, like I feel I have!”

When she decided it was time to make a change, Michelle was a veteran, with more than seven years of claims adjusting experience, and extensive experience as a law clerk. As a desk adjuster, she was assigned the most challenging cases, with long hours and meagre pay. Her company had recently gone through an acquisition “and the [new] company didn't encourage growth or development.” In fact, despite being highly personable, hardworking and ambitious, it was expected that she would remain in her old job, which she describes as “limiting” and “a dead end”.

“Prior to the acquisition, [the company] really encouraged you to try new things and see where you best fit … The stress of the job, the hours and the claimants were affecting my health as well ... So I realized I had to do something.”

However, the search was progressing slowly, and it was very difficult for her to get time off for interviews. “I wasn't having much luck but had seen the signs for the Seneca Employment programme and one day decided to pop in to see what it was about. I initially thought I was just going to get some leads, but realized immediately how much they did to assist people with securing good employment.” A job interview soon followed.

“When I was finished my interview, I was the fifth candidate that week, and they hired me right on the spot! Only a few days before I had sat in on the interviewing skills workshop, and used the suggestions and ideas I got that day in my interview.”

Michelle was now branch manager and executive adjuster of the newest location of a boutique claims adjusting business.

“I LOVE my new job.  I feel like I am making a difference every day in people’s lives. I don't always get to provide the outcome I would like, but I try to make the process a pleasurable, smooth one for the insured. I am no longer chained to my desk until 7 p.m., I make my own hours and I am on the road meeting with people every day.

“I'm constantly meeting new people, and learning new things. The pay is always a bonus, but what I earn is equivalent with how hard I work! It's that simple. So being a hard worker pays off now! I love the people I work with at my company, and I have a boss who encourages everyone to excel. It's been a year, but I keep asking myself "Why didn't I do this sooner?" Fear and feeling unprepared to change companies kept me at that dead end job.”

Michelle’s Employment Consultant remarked, “It’s not only that our services helped you but more importantly that you were open to the suggestions and implemented them to land your dream job!”

“Thank you again for the tools and skills you and the Seneca team equipped me with - a forty something woman in a dead end job - to get the job of my dreams!”
