MENTORING WORKS

YU YAN, MENTORING CLIENT.

April 24th, 2018.

“The Mentorship programme at Seneca College has helped me land my first teaching job at a local college. It wouldn’t have happened, if not for my mentor’s help. His encouragement and support really mean a lot to me.”

In 2011, Yu Yan earned her Ph.D. Mathematics from a university in Hong Kong. Initially employed as a college Lecturer in China, she arrived in Canada in 2015.

With her superior level of qualifications, Yu Yan was referred for mentoring through one of the member organizations of the Mentoring Partnership.

The Mentoring Partnership (mentoringpartnership.ca) is a collaborative effort of TRIEC (Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council), Seneca College, and other community and corporate partners. The Partnership matches highly skilled immigrants with mentors who are firmly established in their field. Mentors help their mentees to understand industry trends, job market and job search strategies, as well as culture, communication and networking, within a specifically Canadian context.

Matched with a mentor in Seneca College’s Faculty of Continuing Education and Training, she was subsequently introduced to members of his network.

A very proactive communicator with exceptional follow-through, Yu Yan has thrived. Through her mentor’s network, she was offered a position: This past summer, she began teaching a half course at Seneca College, and has continued to do so.

“I dearly hope my work at Seneca will lead to a full-time position … I’m meeting my manager soon … and I think I will check with her if there is a chance for me to apply to become full-time teaching staff. I really enjoy my work there.”

To her mentoring coach, she offered this assessment: “I’m writing to tell you how much I appreciate your continued support to me throughout this program. I owe so much to both you and my mentor.”
